Some Reasons Why I Ride...
A body can do a lotta thinkin when it's on a cruise...When you are ripping down the tarmac with a grin on your face. I get into a limbo head-space once I get outta town, letting the miles click away under the front tire. Worries of today just don't seem to have the grip or traction that they did when I was sitting at home. The pipe melody of 'waaaaaahhhh' and the wind whistling past my head combine and become a mantra that my head echos and multiplies until it serves to chase away all but my most pressing focus... My mirrors, gauges and the scenery that is unfolding before my eyes.
I am tuned to the rhythm of the wind, pipes and tires on the road... and I can truly relax. You might say "Edge, there is still the constant awareness of traffic, the wind buffeting you, the bike is demanding your constant attention and guidance... How can you relax?" Let me be a little more succinct... All those things you mention, those are the very things that relax me.
When I was in USMC Basic Training (1971), second phase was rifle range. We qualified with M-14's. We were taught a very valuable lesson, altho the teachers were talking about the rifle range, it applied to life as well. B.R.A.S.S. Breathe, Relax, Aim, Slack, Squeeze...
Think about it, apply it to a bike. As you are getting on yer trusty steed ya Breathe and then Relax. Aim yerself, take up the Slack in the clutch and Squeeze the throttle... See ya gotta relax before ya can squeeze...
So, remember... An hour riding equals 1 hour in the psych chair... if ya RELAX.... and don't forget to 'Breathe', let your shoulders drop and relax.
