    Did you know:
    • Every 3 minutes someone in the US is diagnosed with a blood cancer
    • Despite progress, more than a third of blood cancer patients still do not survive five years after their diagnosis.
    • Every 9 minutes someone in the US dies of a blood cancer

In April 2012, Richard Blevins was diagnosed with Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) which is an aggressive type of acute myeloid leukemia in which there are too many immature blood-forming cells (promyelocytes) in the blood and bone marrow. This blood cancer is somewhat rare, very aggressive, and only represents 5-15% of all leukemia’s. If chemotherapy treatment begins early on, remission can be achieved. Like many cancers survivors, patients have to continue chemo for up to 2-3 years after having clear bone marrow biopsies to prevent relapse. Thanks to the ongoing research by the Leukemia Lymphoma Society new drugs and therapies are being developed to treat and cure a wide array of cancers, thus prolonging lives and giving hope to those who otherwise would be labeled incurable and hopeless.

Evidence of this research and advancements can be found in Richard’s case as today he celebrates six years as a cancer survivor in complete remission. Experimental drugs were developed, approved and used in his case and today is the Gold Standard of treatment for people with APL. Richard can attest firsthand how important it is to raise awareness, and the funds essential to continue this research so more people can have success stories like his.

Despite Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s progress to date, blood cancer still kills people. But thanks to promising LLS funded research in the field and on the horizon, we have a real opportunity to change that outcome. With continued support, the thousands of patients who don't respond to current treatments will have new and potentially better tolerated treatment options. And we can ensure that patients get better access to life-saving treatments and therapies and quality of life. With your help, we can make that happen not someday, but today. It goes without saying, Cancer knows no boundaries and Richard asks that you join him for this very worthy cause by participating in and making a financial donation to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Every little bit helps and together we can make a difference.

Please share this post or flyer with your family, friends, church and social/riding groups. Your contribution and participation will change lives!
