Event Desc

  • Annual motorcycle ride and poker run held in Girard and Southeast Kansas to help raise money for the Melisa Harley Memorial Scholarship fund, financial aide given to graduates of Girard High School (Unified School District 248). Melisa grew up in Girard, attending Girard schools grades K-12. She was active in her church, 4H, musical programs and the Pittsburg Community Theater. She attended Pittsburg State University where she was a communication major. She wrote for the Collegio, the campus newspaper, was in the Pride of the Plains Marching Band, Kappa Delta Service Sorority, the choir and other organizations. Upon graduation from Pittsburg State she received the prestigious Golden Gorilla Award for her contributions to the college. At PSU she met her future husband. Together they lived and worked in the State of Georgia, planning to return closer to "home" one day. However, on December 11, 2001 and intruder broke into their house while her husband was still at work and in a random act of violence he murdered Melisa who was just 24-years-old at the time of her death. Her father loves to ride motorcycles, especially Harleys, so he and Melisa's mother came up with this run as a way to honor and celebrate Melisa's life and her love of Girard schools.
