To whom it may concern... Just got back home (Palau) and am still trying to get over the withdrawal symptoms of being on the road, on a Harley for 5 weeks... The "after a long trip blues", as I have come to call them, have been keeping me from wanting to do much... But, I wanted to put it out there that there is a stretch of road up in northern California that bears some serious consideration when planning to ride it. It is referred to as Mattole Road (route 211) the road through the "lost coast" (you can find it here
http://www.pashnit.com/maps/MattoleMap.htm and here
http://www.takemytrip.com/07orcal/07_13a.htm and here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_211).
I have to say that even though the scenery and wilderness was great, the road conditions were horrible at best. The potholes and gigantic cracks on the road made the hundred plus miles of very twisty roads a real hell... Hated having to deal with 20 potholes per 10 feet of road, just to land on the 21st 'cause there was nowhere else to go but off the cliff or into the embankment. Driving from bright sun into a dark tree canopied road made the navigating of the potholes that more difficult and totally crazy. It took us over 4 hours of hard riding to travel the 100 plus miles which was supposed to have been a side trip on our Avenue of the Giants ride, on our way back to Eureka.
Anyways, we are still working on trying to sort through all the pics and stories, so that we may upload our latest adventure to our ride website (daveandmargie.net) and share it with you all.
Ride safe...
