Installing a Tachometer on Harley Davidson FLHR

  • September 22, 2009 10:00 AM PDT
I bought a tachometer on ebay and want to put it on my 2002 HD Road King FLHR.  The tach has three wires on it... a red, black and, green.

I assume the red is power, black is ground, and green is for the tach signal.

My question is, where do I connect the green signal wire?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Joe,

There should be a PINK wire somewhere in the headlight assembly, or in the dash under the speedometer. The PINK wire will be capped off since it didn't come with a tach. To be sure that this is the tachometer signal wire, get a voltmeter, connect black to ground, and red to the PINK wire. Start the motor...if the voltage goes up with the RPMs, you got it. I am almost positive that the ONLY pink wire in the speedometer area on a Harley is the tach signal wire.

If you can't find the PINK wire, some of the newer years have the speedometer already wired for a speedo/tach combination. Pin #3 on the speedometer should be the tachometer signal wire.

Sounds right to me. I put on on my 2002 Road King and used the Pink wire.
